Founded in 1948 as a non-profit organization, The
Amato Opera Theater, Inc., has survived on a collective artistic desire
to present grand opera that is good theater -- and, at the same time, has
created a platform for aspiring young artists.
Under the direction of Anthony and Sally Amato, it has
served New York threefold:
- It has provided a testing ground for young singers seeking training
and experience in opera. A legend now in the music community, many performers
who have benefitted from its program sing, direct, and conduct in opera
houses around the world.
|
- In its original home on Bleecker Street, and now in its home on the
Bowery in the heart of Manhattan's "Off-Off Broadway" theater
district, it has presented to the public thousands of performances of over
forty of the world's greatest repertory operas. It has also presented rarely
performed works, including Verdi's I Due Foscari, Giordano's La
Cena delle Beffe, Ricci's Crispino e la Comare, and American
premieres of Verdi's Oberto, Alzira, Aroldo, Un Giorno di Regno
and La Battaglia di Legnano, Gomes' Salvator Rosa and Boito's
Nerone, and the world premiere of Kalmanoff's Empty Bottle.
- By means of Anthony Amato's Operas-in-Brief -- first performed
at Town Hall and currently, in schools, parks and community centers
-- it has made its unique contribution to the field of education.
This program has provided countless young people with a pleasurable
entry into the wonderful, very accessible world of opera.
